"setting driving standards" Some Maltese Driving StatisticsArticle 1maltatoday newspaper of Feb 2-8, 2001
Shocking
figures reveal that over 1000 accidents per month took place on the Maltese
roads last year (2000). There were 12 fatalities resulting from car crashes
– two less than in 1999 when 14 people died on our roads.
But overall, the number of accidents increased from a staggering
11,461 to 12,654. (These are just reported crashes)
From
the 12,654 crashes recorded, most of them – 11,676 – were not serious,
while 966 led to people sustaining injuries. During 1999, there were 10,507
minor accidents,
The
rising number of accidents has been linked to ever-increasing amount of cars
appearing on the Maltese roads. In fact the number of cars registered almost
doubled during the 1990’s. In 1990, the total of vehicles on the road
stood at 139,000, while by 1999, this figure had risen to 238,333. (Reminder
– Maltese population approx 375,000!)
